Circleville, OH - Ohio Christian University Men's Soccer battle through back-and-forth to earn a 3-2 victory over Defiance College on Saturday afternoon, with a late goal from freshman
Grant Brumfield sealing the win.
The Trailblazers came out strong in the first half, finding the back of the net twice to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Avery Brengelman opened the scoring before
Mason Sims added a second goal to give OCU the early advantage, including an assist from goalkeeper
David Spicer Jr.
Defiance responded quickly after halftime, scoring twice to bring the match level at 2-2.
With the game winding down, the Trailblazers continued to push for an answer. In the 86th minute, Brumfield found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal, giving OCU a 3-2 lead with just minutes remaining.
"It felt amazing," Brumfield said. "Honestly, I kind of blacked out once I ran to the corner to celebrate. All glory to God."
OCU's defense held firm over the final minutes. Spicer Jr. recorded seven saves, including several important stops as the Trailblazers protected their late lead. "Especially after Grant ended with that goal, they had scored those two goals quickly in the second half, so it was just about regrouping with the guys, keeping everyone organized and getting the ball away," Spicer Jr. said. "My job was to keep the ball out of my net, and we did a good job of that. I'm really proud of the guys for working hard and sticking with it the whole time. That's something that we're not always used to, but we did a good job of it today."
The Trailblazers also controlled the corner-kick battle, finishing with a 10-1 advantage over Defiance. The victory is an encouraging result for OCU, showing resilience after losing their 2-0 lead and finding a way to finish the match with a late goal and a strong defense.
The Trailblazers will travel to Grace Christian University on Thursday for a 3:00 PM start.
