OCU's Emily King Receives Prestigious Michael S. Schisler Scholarship

Palm Coast, FL - Ohio Christian University student-athlete Emily King has been named a 2026 recipient of the Michael S. Schisler Scholarship, a nationally recognized award presented through the NCCAA to first-generation student-athletes who demonstrate strong faith, leadership, perseverance, and academic excellence.

The Michael S. Schisler Scholarship was established to remove financial barriers for first-generation NCCAA students who are pursuing a Christ-centered college education. Since 2019, the scholarship program has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships and school loan payoffs to student-athletes from diverse backgrounds across the NCCAA.

Emily, who is a part of the women's volleyball team, was selected following an extensive application and interview process that included recommendation letters, academic requirements, and multiple rounds of interviews.

"When I applied for the scholarship in January, I thought that my application would be overlooked," Emily said. "The application process was kind of lengthy because of the recommendation letters and academic requirements."

After advancing through the first round of interviews, Emily was invited to Florida for the final stage of the selection process as an "Ultra-Finalist" and to attend the NCCAA Pro-Am event.

"I was in shock," Emily said after learning she has been selected as an Ultra-Finalist. "I had to call my parents and Coach Ally (Coyle) immediately to update them."

During the trip, Emily connected with NCCAA leadership, scholarship supporters, and fellow finalists while participating in activities surrounding the event. She also took part in a community outreach project serving children through a sports clinic, where she got to help with sand volleyball.

At the scholarship banquet, Emily was announced as one of the three recipients and awarded a $20,000 scholarship.

"I had no words," Emily said. "I stood there in shock as they handed me a massive check for $20,000."

Emily said that her experience gave her a greater understanding and appreciation for the mission and heart behind the NCCAA and the Michael S. Schisler Scholarship.

"This scholarship seeks out applications who are first-generation college students, student athletes, focused on their faith and leadership and who show work ethic and determination that reflect Mike's," Emily said.

This scholarship will allow Emily to graduate from Ohio Christian debt-free while pursuing her future plans of becoming a geneticist.

"This entire experience truly changed my life," Emily said. "I will graduate from Ohio Christian University debt-free because of their generosity."
